1983Where it began

A Grassroots Beginning

Wishing Star Foundation began with the caring heart of Coeur d’Alene first-grade teacher Karen Kurowski. After losing a student to brain cancer, Karen wanted to bring special quality of life to children facing serious illness.

She cashed in her 401(k), bought tires for her car, and began going door to door asking for donations. In 1983, Karen and her husband Ed founded Wishing Star Foundation to grant special wishes to children and families facing life-threatening circumstances.
